Just buying Monlan Coffee is helping the villagers of Ayae, as they are getting a premium up front price for their coffee beans.  The value chain of coffee from crop to cup is an interesting one.  If you think about coffee, when you pay, let’s say $5.00 for a Large Flat White (double shot coffee) at a local café, you are getting somewhere between 18 to 21 grams of ground coffee beans. In terms of what the growers get out of that coffee you buy is approx. $0.15 cents per 20 grams of coffee beans. They work by far the hardest and longest to bring you that coffee and they add the most value to that coffee taste, and yet they receive the least for all their efforts. It’s a story that we know too well, where villagers and farmers get exploited. Big coffee brands are big business and they pay Hollywood stars big money to represent and sell their brand, while also claiming ethical sourcing. The real question is, what do they actually pay the villagers?

At Monlan Coffee we are trying to help support the villagers of AYAE who spend all their time growing the coffee beans that we love to drink. It’s about giving back and trying to make their lives a little easier by helping to purchase some much needed coffee bean processing equipment. It doesn’t take away from the hours they spend in the jungle tending the crops on the plantation, but it does help in the processing of the cherry into green coffee beans.
